I would have loved to keep the kid 10 years ago, but there was no way I had time to teach
I hired a brand new HVAC technician about three weeks after he received his certification. I really needed someone experienced and ready to hit the ground running, but I hired the guy because he showed promise and he had a great personality. I knew the kid was going to be successful. Business was extremely busy at the time when I hired the HVAC technician. The new guy couldn’t keep up and he was constantly having problems. After three months, I felt it was better if he moved to a different company. I hated to let the kid go, but I needed someone with more experience. 3 weeks ago, I went to a business seminar and I ran into the guy. He was ten years older, but I recognized his face immediately. He was still working in the HV AC repair & installation industry, which made me happy. We decided to have a beer at the pub after class and the two of us discussed the last few years. The kid has been working for the same company since he left my business and now he is in charge of the heat pump repairs and installations. He has a crew of workers that report directly to him. I have to say that I was very impressed by his resume, but not surprised. I would have loved to keep the kid 10 years ago, but there was no way I had time to teach. I’m so happy he found somewhere to land that was a huge success. The kid reminded me a lot of myself at that age.
